Strong Finish Lifts Stags To 70-64 Win Over Saint Peter's At Alumni Hall
Jan 21, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Jonathan Han didn't have the most points in the game. He didn't have the most rebounds either. But Han was just as responsible for the Stags 70-64 win over Saint Peter's as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Han dished off a career-high 13 assists, eight of which came on the final eight Fairfield baskets of the game, which helped the men's basketball team post the victory over Saint Peter's at Alumni Hall on Monday night.
It was Han who sent a no-look alley oop pass to Anthony Johnson that sent the crowd into a frenzy, and it was the guard who sent a cross-court pass to Herbie Allen, who nailed the three pointer that sealed the win for the Stags with 19 seconds remaining. Allen returned to the lineup with a 14-point effort, missing last Friday's game against Iona after spraining his thumb two days earlier.
This game did not disappoint the 2,449 fans that packed Alumni Hall for Fairfield's final game at the on-campus facility this year. There were 16 lead changes in the second half, 15 of which came in the final nine minutes of the game as the Stags never trailed in the opening half.
Fairfield used a 10-2 run to start the game that enabled the home team to keep Saint Peter's in a come-from-behind for the entire 20 minutes. The Stags took their biggest lead with 13:18 remaining in the first half as Warren Edney's lay up pushed the score to 20-9. Saint Peter's began to whittle away at from that moment, using a 5-0 spurt to make the game more manageable at 20-14.
The Stags were able to regain part of that lead which gave them a nine-point advantage at 27-18, but the visitors put together eight straight points that made the score 27-26 with 2:52 remaining. Anthony Johnson's lay up ended the streak to turn the advantage back to three points before Akeem Gooding's lay up in the closing seconds made it a one-point halftime lead.
Saint Peter's started the second half with a 10-4 run which translated into its biggest lead of the game at 38-33 with 16:42 remaining. Still trailing by five with 12:42 on the clock, Fairfield went on a 12-6 run with three-plus minutes to regain the lead at 45-44 with 9:08 on the clock. It was at that point that two teams began trading baskets, resulting in 15 lead changes the rest of the way.
The game was still in doubt with 2:42 remaining and Saint Peter's holding close to a 60-59 edge. Han found Anthony Johnson underneath the basket for a three-point play to give the Stags a 62-60 lead, and repeated the play a minute later for another Johnson basket and free throw combo to give Fairfield a 65-60 lead.
Saint Peter's cut the deficit to three points after Todd Sowell muscled the ball in the basket from three feet away, making the score 65-62 with 44 seconds remaining. Allen iced the game with his second three-point shot of the game at the 19-second mark, doubling the Fairfield lead to six points, 68-62.
Mike Evanovich led all Fairfield scorers with 19 points, while Anthony Johnson came off the bench to tally 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Four Saint Peter's players reached double figures, led by Sowell's 16 points and seven rebounds.
The Stags return to action on Friday night when they host Canisius College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 7 pm. The game will be broadcasted nationally on ESPNU.
