BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Three Fairfield University players reached double figures, led by Yorel Hawkins' career-high 16 points, but it was not enough to overcome a fast start by Siena College as the Saints posted a 74-61 win over the Stags in the conference opener for both teams.
Fairfield jumped out to an early lead as Hawkins tallied the game's first points on free throws, and Greg Nero broke a 2-2 tie with a layup to give the Stags a small edge. The Saints answered with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes, as Cory Magee and Ronald Moore finished the run with a three-point basket to make the score 14-4.
Siena continued to build upon its lead in the half, reaching its biggest lead of 16 points on two occasions - 24-8 at 10:10 and 27-11 at 9:26. Fairfield fought its way back into the half with a strong finish to the half which enabled the home team to cut the deficit to 10 points at 39-29 after Herbie Allen netted a pair of free throws to close the first half scoring.
Fairfield came out in the second half and used a 6-2 spurt to pull within six points at 41-35 with 16:45 on the clock. The lead still remained at six points 43-37 with 15:35 remaining, but Siena pulled away once again with three point shots to regain its double digit lead at 53-41 with 13:24 on the clock.
The lead reached as many as 18 points following Josh Duell's three-point shot at the 4:27 mark to push Siena's advantage to 67-49. The Stags erased half of that deficit with nine straight points, including six markers from Mike Evanovich. Fairfield would come no closer than nine points as the Saints settled for a 13-point victory.
Allen tallied 13 points for the Stags as a reserve, while Greg Nero reached double figures with 10 points. Alex Franklin paced the Siena attack with 1 points, while Kenny Hasbrouck netted 14 markers for the Saints.
Fairfield returns to action on December 21 when it hosts Saint Joseph's University for a 7:30 match up at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
