Han's Career-High 24 Points Sends Stags Past Saint Peter's In OT
Dec 28, 2007
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - It all comes down to timing, and Jonathan Han certainly had timed it right. The guard tallied eight points in the final two-plus minutes of regulation and added six more in overtime to help Fairfield erase a nine-point deficit with four minutes remaining in regulation and post an 89-78 win over Saint Peter's College.
Fairfield jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game, keeping the Peacocks off the board for just over five minutes. The lead remained the same at 16-2, but the home team found its stroke over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to 20-17 with seven minutes left in the half.
Saint Peter's eventually tied the game at 22-22 with 4:50 remaining, before the Stags tallied the next four points off a dunk by Anthony Johnson and a jumper from Warren Edney. Fairfield carried a three-point lead into halftime at 33-30, as Johnson almost had a double double at intermission with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Fairfield doubled its advantage over the first four minutes of the second half, pushing the score to 42-36 behind four more points from Johnson, which gave the sophomore his second straight double double. Saint Peter's scored the next seven points to take the lead for the first time at 43-42 following a basket by Darrell Lampley.
The Peacocks eventually built the lead to nine points at 65-56, which is when Han took over the game. After Yorel Hawkins hit a pair of free throws to make the score 65-58, Han tallied back-to-back three-point baskets to cut the lead to a point at 65-64. Marty O'Sullivan kept the run going by hitting a one-and-one situation to give the Stags a brief lead at 66-65.
Saint Peter's answered with Nick Leon's three-point shot to take a two-point lead, which Han took back with a driving layup to tie the score at 68-68 with 29 seconds on the clock. Leon tried a three pointer with seconds on the clock, but the shot was errant and kept the score tied at the end of regulation.
Fairfield used the three-point shot in the opening minute of overtime as Warren Edney and O'Sullivan wrapped three pointers around a trey from Saint Peter's Raul Orta. The Stags never trailed from that point and outscored the Peacocks by a 13-5 margin the rest of the way, which included six consecutive points from Han that turned a three-point lead into a seven-point advantage with 43 seconds remaining.
Six Fairfield players reached double figures in the game, and received 22 bench points in the second half and overtime.
Fairfield returns to action on December 31 when it battles William & Mary on the road. Game time is set for 2 pm.
