BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Yorel Hawkins tied his career high with 11 points and added a personal best eight rebounds in the men's basketball team's 55-51 loss to St. Francis College. Hawkins made five of six shots from the floor, with his only miss coming from beyond the three-point arc.

The Stags jumped out to an early lead, holding a 15-6 advantage in the opening eight minutes of play. Freshman Sean Grzeck tallied six of the Stags' points with a pair of three pointers, his first collegiate points. Fairfield's lead was nearly cut in half with a pair of fast-break baskets by the home team, making the score 15-10 with eight-plus minutes remaining.

Fairfield's lead remained intact for another four minutes until Kayode Ayeni's layup tied the score at 22-22 with 4:47 on the clock. Mamadou Diakhate regained the Fairfield lead with a pair of free throws, but St. Francis tied the game and took the lead by scoring on its next two possessions. Bass Yessoufou tallied two free throws and a layup to complete the four-point swing. St. Francis' two-point lead remained at intermission, as the Terriers went into the locker room with a 31-29 edge.

The Stags stayed close in the opening minutes of the first half, staying with a possession of the Terriers. Hawkins eventually pushed Fairfield in front with a three-point basket at the 12:52 mark, making the score 42-41. Jonathan Han's basket gave Fairfield a three-point edge at the 12:29 mark, before Ricky Cadell's three-point shot tied the game at 44-44.

After Han's basket, the Stags did not score for nearly six minutes, but their defense kept the team in the game by allowing only three points during that time. Trailing 47-44 with under seven minutes remaining, Greg Nero erased two points of the deficit with a layup at 6:49. A pair of free throws by Warren Edney allowed Fairfield to take the lead at 48-47, but Robert Haynes' hoop recaptured the Terriers' one-point lead at 49-48. Haynes made the lead three points with a slam dunk at the 2:39 mark, but Edney's three-pointer tied the game at 51-51 with 2:16 on the clock.

Fairfield did not score again, which allowed St. Francis' 4-0 run over the final minute to stand up as the margin of victory.

The Stags return to action on December 1 when they travel to Georgetown University for a 1 pm game.
