
Men's Basketball Returns To Action By Hosting Saint Joseph's Friday Night

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team returns to the hardwood when it hosts Saint Joseph's University Friday night. The game is slated for a 7:30 pm start. Before the game, the Bridgeport Police and Fire Departments will play a "Guns and Hoses" charity basketball game beginning at 5 pm.
Both departments will host a toy drive during the doubleheader, which will benefit children from the City of Bridgeport. Individuals and families that donate a toy to the drive will receive free admission to the doubleheader.
Fairfield University plays its third straight home game Friday night. Freshman Yorel Hawkins tallied a career-high 16 points against Siena in the Stags' last outing, leading the team in scoring for the third time this year. He also was the team's top scorer against Holy Cross (11 points) and St. Francis (11 points). Han continues to lead the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game, just slightly higher than Greg Nero's 10.7 points every forty minutes. Anthony Johnson, who joins Han as the only two Stags to start all nine games, is the team's top rebounder with 6.2 caroms per game. After tonight's game, the Stags will play six of their next seven on the road with the one home game coming on January 11 against Loyola College.
Saint Joseph's University comes off a 90-84 loss at Creighton University, despite four Hawks reaching double figures in the scoring column. Tasheed Carr just missed a double double with a team-high 23 points and nine assists. Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Darrin Govens each netted 14 markers for Saint Joseph's. Calathes (17.4 ppg), Govens (13.6 ppg), and Carr (12.3 ppg) join Ahmad Nivins are the team's top scorers. Nivins leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 caroms per contest. The Hawks are playing their second straight road game, the second of five consecutive away contests that runs through the beginning of January. The team comes off a four-game home stand that included wins over Ball State and Penn State, as well as losses to Holy Cross and nationally-ranked Gonzaga. Two of the team's last three losses have come in overtime - Gonzaga and Creighton. Tonight's game is the first of two consecutive road games against MAAC teams, heading to Albany on December 28.
