
Three-Point Barrage Sends Stags To 71-50 Setback

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Greg Nero scored a team-high 14 points, including eight in the second half, in the men's basketball team's 71-50 loss to William & Mary on the road. Jonathan Han was the only other Fairfield scorer in double figures with 11 points.
The first half started with a flurry of three-point baskets by both teams as William & Mary's first 15 points came off the long-range jumper while the Stags netted its first six points from beyond the arc. The two teams combined for 10 three-point baskets, with the Tribe holding a slight 6-4 edge.
William & Mary used its outside shooting prowess to build an early lead, but Fairfield used a three-point hoop by Yorel Hawkins to take its first advantage of the game at 15-12 Mike Evanovich's three pointer pushed Fairfield back in front at 18-17 with 10:01 on the clock. Fairfield went scoreless for the next six minutes, but its defense kept the team in the game as William & Mary only managed an 8-0 run that gave it a 25-18 lead.
Fairfield climbed back into the game behind a three-point play by Jonathan Han and a put-back basket by Anthony Johnson to close within two points at 27-25. The Tribe finished the half by scoring four points off free throws to make the score 31-25 at intermission.
The Tribe picked up where it left off by five more three-point baskets in the opening eight minutes of the second half, helping the home team increase its lead to 54-38 with 11:42 left on the clock. Nathan Mann hit three three pointers during the run, as William & Mary outscored the Stags by a 23-13 count in the first eight minutes of the second half.
The Stags made a strong run at the Tribe with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to nine points at 54-45, courtesy of six points from Greg Nero. William & Mary answered with a 9-2 spurt to regain its 16-point advantage at 63-47, as Danny Sumner tallied all nine markers for the Tribe.
Geoff Middleton scored the last three points of the game, including a basket with 1:41 remaining in the game. His hoop ended a six-minute drought for the Stags, as the last Fairfield basket came from Nero at the 7:37 mark.
Fairfield returns to action on January 4 when it finishes its three-game road swing with a match up against Loyola College. The game is slated for a 7 pm tip-off with the game being televised on ESPNU.
