
Men's Basketball Captures Fourth Straight Win With 75-68 Victory At Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Greg Nero tallied his third double double of the season with a team-high 20 points and a game-best 13 rebounds as the Stags men's basketball team posted a 75-68 win over Saint Peter's on the road. The win extended Fairfield's win streak to four games, and improved its overall record to 12-6 and its MAAC mark to 5-2.
Fairfield never trailed in this game, although the game was tied three times in the opening six minutes. With the score knotted at 9-9, Herbie Allen hit a three-point shot that put the Stags in front for good at 12-9. Fairfield would eventually push its advantage to seven points at 20-13 with 7:56 remaining in the first half.
The visitors continued to build on their advantage over the next few minutes, as the deficit reached 11 points at 28-17 following a pair of free throws by Yorel Hawkins with 4:27 on the clock. Saint Peter's fought its way back into the game with a 9-0 run over the next two-plus minutes that made the score 28-26 with 2:35 remaining. Still leading by two points at 30-28, Fairfield closed the half with a 7-2 run that allowed the Stags to go into the locker room with a 37-30 halftime edge.
Fairfield scored 11 field goals in the first half, but seven were beyond the three-point line, including two from Jonathan Han, Mike Evanovich, and Allen.
The Stags saw their lead shrink to four points early in the second half, but the advantage quickly was rebuilt to nine points at 55-46 with 16 minutes left. Fairfield still held a nine-point edge with 9:28 on the clock at 55-46. Saint Peter's never came closer than four points the rest of the way, as the Stags picked up their fifth road win of the season.
Evanovich made five three pointers in the game to finish the contest with 15 points, which included three long-range jumpers in final five minutes of the second half. All three of his three pointers were important in the half, including one that turned a four-point lead into a seven-point edge with under five minutes remaining in the half.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, January 17 when it hosts Siena College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
