
Career Highs Lead Men's Basketball To Third Straight Win With 65-51 Win Over Canisius

Yorel Hawkins, Ryan Olander, and Sean Crawford registered a career high for scoring while Lyndon Jordan tied his personal best as the Fairfield University men's basketball team won its third straight game with a 65-51 win over Canisius College on the road. Hawkins tallied 18 points, Olander netted 11 points, Crawford registered nine points, and Jordan scored 12 points in the victory.
The Stags fell behind early in the game as Elton Frazer hit a three-point field goal to start the half and Frank Turner added a pair of free throws which translated into a 5-1 Golden Griff lead. Fairfield's defense pulled together and kept Canisius off the scoreboard over the next seven minutes which enabled the visitors to put together an 11-0 run that resulted in a 12-5 lead with 11:42 remaining in the half.
Greg Logins ended the Canisius drought with a field goal at the 11:27 mark, which started a 6-1 spurt that pulled the Griffs to within two points at 13-11 with 7:37 remaining in the half. The Stags pushed the lead back to as many as five in the half, but Canisius fought back again and tied the game with 21 seconds remaining in the game off Robert Goldsberry's three pointer. Herbie Allen made of one two free throws with seven seconds on the clock, providing the Stags with a 25-24 advantage at half time.
After each team traded a pair of field goals in the opening two-plus minutes of the second half, Fairfield scored 10 of the next 12 points, including a jumper from Allen and a three-point field goal by Ryan Olander, to take its biggest lead at 39-30 with 15:12 remaining in the half.
The lead reached at many as 10 points before Turner hit his second three pointer of the game to cut the deficit back to seven points at 45-38 with 11:41 left. Still ahead by seven points at 49-42, Fairfield scored three straight baskets off a field goal and two free throws from Hawkins as well as a field goal from Jordan to build its biggest lead of the game at 55-42 with 5:08 on the clock. The Stags lead reached as many as 17 points late in the game before the team settled for its 65-51 win.
Hawkins added 10 rebounds to complete his second straight double double and third of the season.
Fairfield finishes up its two-game swing through Western New York with a Sunday afternoon game against Niagara University on Sunday at 2 pm.
