Dec 14, 2008

Anthony Johnson and Greg Nero each registered a double double to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team to a 66-60 win over Drexel University at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Johnson recorded 14 points and a personal-best 16 rebounds, while Nero registered 11 points and 11 rebounds. The win extended the Stags overall winning streak to seven games and its home winning streak to nine contests.

Fairfield never trailed in this game, although the visiting team managed to tie the game twice in the opening five minutes at 4-4 and 6-6. After Jamie Harris tied the game for the second time at the 15:07 mark, Warren Edney answered with a lay up to push Fairfield in front for good at 8-6 on the team's next possession.

Edney's basket started a  14-4 run that would last for nearly six minutes, giving Fairfield a commanding 20-10 advantage with 8:41 on the clock. Edney had five points and Johnson added four points during the Stags' run.

Drexel stayed in the game with an 11-5 spurt over the next four minutes that cut the lead to four points at 25-21 following Leon Spencer's dunk. The Dragons continued to chip away at the lead and pulled closest at 29-26 with 1:10 left in the fist half. Fairfield doubled up on that lead with three free throws, including two by Jonathan Han, to take a 32-26 lead at halftime.

The lead remained at three points with 15 minutes remaining, as Harris netted a three-point shot to keep close at 38-35. Han responded with his own three-point shot and Edney followed with a dunk on the next possession to keep the Stags in control at 43-35 at the 12:41 mark.

Drexel still kept in the game over the next 10 minutes, staying with five points with two minutes remaining. The Dragons tallied the next five points off a Scott Rodgers three-point shot and a lay up by Evan Neisler to pull within a point at 61-60 with 32 seconds left.

The Stags went to the line six more times over the next 30 seconds and made five of those shots to complete a 5-0 run that ended the game and gave Fairfield's its six-point win.

Four of Fairfield's starting five reached double figures, namely Johnson, Nero, Han (12 points), and Edney (11 points). Rodgers and Gerald Colds paced the Drexel attack with 12 points each.

The Stags will not play another game for 11 days, taking the court for its next game on December 26 against the University of Connecticut at the XL Center.
