
Men's Basketball Win Streak Ends With 75-55 Loss To Second-Ranked UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. -- It took the second-ranked team in the country to end the Fairfield University men's basketball win streak at seven games, as the University of Connecticut posted a 75-55 victory at the XL Center on Friday night. Greg Nero led all Fairfield scorers with 16 points, the only Stag in double figures on the night.
The Huskies jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening four minutes, before Herbie Allen cut into that lead with a three-point field goal that made the score 7-5. Jerome Dyson hit a jumper to double its advantage at 9-5. Fairfield answered with a 6-0 run as Nero wrapped a pair of lay-ups around a Han lay-up to push the visiting team to an 11-9 advantage.
Jeff Adrien tallied a basket on back-to-back possessions that pushed UConn back in front at 13-11. Mike Evanovich gave the Stags their final lead with a three-point field goal at the top of the key, giving Fairfield a 14-13 advantage. A pair of turnovers helped fuel an 8-0 UConn run that gave the Huskies a seven-point advantage at 21-14 with 9:21 left in the half. The Huskies eventually took its biggest lead of the first half when A.J. Price knocked down a jumper with two seconds remaining, giving UConn a 42-26 lead at intermission.
The Huskies scored the first two baskets of the second half to take a 20-point lead at 46-26 before Yorel Hawkins connected on a three-point shot to bring the lead to 17 points. Fairfield went on a 7-2 run with that Hawkins long-range jumper that cut the lead to 15 points, 48-33, before the Huskies scored the next seven points to push their advantage to 22 points, its largest of the game to that point.
UConn would lead by as many as 27 points in the game - 73-46 with 3:26 on the clock and 75-48 at the three-minute mark. Adrien led all scorers wtih 21 points and added 14 rebounds, while Hasheem Thatbeet added a double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies.
Fairfield returns to action on January 1 when it travels to the Times Union Center for a match up with Siena College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.
