Hawkins made his debut against Wake Forest and just missed double figures with an eight-point night. He reached double digits in his next outing with 11 points at Holy Cross, the first of six double-figure games for the forward. He tallied a season-high 16 points against Siena, hitting a pair of three pointers and a personal-best six free throws. The 16-point effort was his third double-digit performance in a four-game span which included 11 points at St. Francis, 11 points at Georgetown, nine points vs.Yale and 16 points versus Siena. Hawkins scored in all but four of his 26 appearances, including a three-game scoreless streak at the end of the season. In those three scoreless games, Hawkins played just 13 total minutes. Hawkins played 10 or more minutes in all but four games, including a career-high 35 minutes at Georgetown. He just missed a double double with a nine-point, 11-rebound night against Canisius. Hawkins started 19 games as a rookie with his first start coming against Holy Cross at home. It was the first of eight straight starts for Hawkins, a streak he would surpass with 11 straight starts from January 4 to February 8.

Yorel Hawkins began his first season as a member of the Fairfield University men's basketball program after a successful career at Apex High School. He earned All-Tri-8 conference honors as a senior, and picked up All-State second team accolades as a senior. He finished his career at Apex High School as the program's all-time leading scorer, netting nearly 1,500 points during his four-year stay. With his assistance, Apex captured three straight conference championships. He earned the conference player of the year as a junior. Hawkins registered a double double as a senior, averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds per game. He just missed out on a double double during his junior season, finishing the year with 20.3 points and nine rebounds per outing. He was one of 20 players selected for the North Carolina East-West All-Star game, joining Fairfield University teammate Sean Grzeck for that honor.
