
Five Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Named To All-MAAC Team

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Jack Cleverley (Dorset, England), Matthew Uy (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), and Michael O'Keeffe (Christchurch, N.Z.) earned a spot on the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) first team as the annual awards were announced on Friday night. Erik Ilisije (Manalapan, N.J.) and Christian Uy (New Hyde Park, N.J.) received a berth to the All-MAAC second team. The teams were selected by vote of the conference head coaches.
Cleverley appeared in all 18 games during the 2009 season, and was a key player in the Stags defensive efforts. He scored one goal during the season, netting the team's only goal in a 1-1 tie with Siena College. O'Keeffe picked up the first team nod in his first year with the Stags, as the freshman tallied four shutouts and a 1.19 goals against average in 17 starts. He played 1514 minutes and posted 74 saves for a .787 save percentage.
Matthew Uy was one of the team's top all-around players, registering six points. He was also one of the team's best defenders, giving the team support both offensive and defensively. Uy recorded one goal and four assists during the year.
Illisije placed second on the team with 12 total points, all of which came off six goals. He netted five of those goals over a three-game span against MAAC opponents. The forward started the run with a goal against Saint Peter's, and followed with a pair of goals against Manhattan and Rider. Christian Uy was third among his teammates with 10 points, registering three goals and four assists. The senior tallied at least one point in six of the team's 17 games.
Ilisije joined David Bartholomew and Shane Kurtz on the MAAC's All-Academic team. Student-athletes who obtain a 3.20 GPA on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the honor.
The Fairfield University men's soccer team, under Head Coach Carl Rees, finished the 2009 season wtih a 9-7-2 overall record and a 5-2-2 MAAC mark. The Stags advanced to the MAAC tournament and reached the semifinals.
