JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Terrence Todd recorded his first career double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Rob Thomson added 20 points and three blocks in the men's basketball team's 72-68 overtime loss to Saint Peter's College on the road.
The Stags held an eight-point lead with with 81 seconds remaining in regulation, but did not score the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Saint Peter's guard Corey Hinnant single-handedly brough the home team all the way back with a pair of three-point baskets and layup off a turnover which tied the score at 60-60 with 30 seconds remaining. The Stags did not get a shot off on that final possession, which sent the game into overtime.
The Peacocks scored the first five points in overtime, including another three pointer from Hinnant. The Stags cut into the lead with Deng Gai's turnaround hook shot, his only points of the game. Regis Devonish pushed the lead back to five points with a pair of free throws, before Thomson netted a pair of charity tosses to make the score 67-64. However, Fairfield never came closer than three points, before settling on the four-point loss.
Fairfield led through most of the game, with the only exception coming in the opening minutes of the game. Saint Peter's started the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points for an 8-2 advantage with 17:30 remaining in the half. The Stags took their first lead of the game on Todd's jumper with 12:27 left on the clock at 11-10. The two teams traded the lead one more time each and before the Red and White took the lead at 15-14 on a pair of Tyquawn Goode free throws. Fairfield would not relinquish that lead until Hinnant's three-point basket on the first possession of overtime.
The Stags eventually increased their first half lead to 13 points, which was the margin at halftime, 37-24. Todd scored 15 of the team's 37 points, making six of nine shots from the field during the first 20 minutes.
DeWitt Maxwell was the third Fairfield player to reach double digits in the game, coming off the bench to 15 points with four assists and three blocks. Saint Peter's Keydren Clark led all scorers with 28 points, making four three-point baskets during the game. Hinnant finished the contest with 15 points, all coming in the final 10 minutes of the game, making all three three-point shots.
Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, January 13 when the team travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for a match up with Marist College.
