Bridgeport, Conn. -- Ajou Deng recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Deng Gai added 16 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks in Fairfield University's (8-15 overall) 70-55 victory over Charleston Southern University (10-15 overall).
The Stags took control of the game early, as Deng put Fairfield ahead on its first possession with a three-point basket. Charleston Southern answered with a pair of baskets on its next two trips down the court, with Chris Warzynski's layup giving the Buccaneers their only lead of the game at 4-3. The Stags scored the next 10 points for a 13-4 advantage with 14:36 left in the first half. Sam Spann and Gai had four points each during the run.
Fairfield's lead eventually reached 18 points, 32-14, with 4:54 remaining, with Nick Delfico scoring six points during the spurt. Charleston Southern used a 10-0 run over the next three minutes which made the deficit eight points, 32-24. Warzynski wrapped a pair of layups around a Kudjo Sogadzi free throw to cut the lead, 33-26, at halftime.
The Stags outscored the Buccaneers by a 10-2 count to start the second half, more than doubling their halftime lead, 43-28. The Fairfield lead never fell below 11 points the rest of the way, reaching as many as 22 points, 59-37 with 8:44 remaining.
Nick Delfico came off the Fairfield bench to add 15 points to the cause, while Spann finished with 11 points and a personal-best six steals. Warzynski was the only Charleston Southern player in double-figures, ending the game with 10 points.
