BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball suffered just its second loss in 10 games with a 69-64 setback to Siena College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Sophomore Jonathan Han led all Fairfield scorers with 15 points, one of three Stags in double figures.
Siena took advantage of 21 Fairfield turnovers, which it turned into 30 points. In the eyes of Stags Head Coach Ed Cooley, that was the reason for the loss.
"The headline for tomorrow is 30 points off turnovers," Cooley said in the post-game press conference. "That's it. Turn out the lights and everybody go home. Siena took advantage and executed off those turnovers to score points."
The Stags trailed by four points at halftime, 33-29, but used a 10-5 start in the opening minutes to take the lead at 39-38 with 16:24 on the clock. Siena tallied four straight points to recapture the lead at 42-39, but a three-point basket by Jonathan Han tied the score at 42-42. That basket was the start of an 11-0 run that saw Fairfield gain its biggest lead to that point at 50-42, which later grew to 10 points.
Siena fought its way back into the game with nine straight points to make it a one-point deficit, as Alex Franklin tallied five of those points. Jonathan Han stopped the Siena run by making one of two free throws to push the lead back to two points. Marty O'Sullivan grabbed the rebounds and laid the ball in the basket to give Fairfield a four-point advantage at 61-57.
The Saints eventually pushed ahead on a pair of Franklin free throws at the 1:06 mark to take the lead for good at 63-62. Siena scored its final eight points at the free throw line.
Franklin finished the game with 13 points for Siena. Han led all Fairfield scorers with 15 points, followed by Anthony Johnson's 14 points.
