BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Senior leadership was represented in full force on Wednesday night, as the Stags received great efforts from Michael Van Schaick, Danny Oglesby, and Marty O'Sullivan in the Stags 73-60 loss to 14th-ranked Georgetown University at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The three seniors combined for 33 of the team's point total, which included a team-high 14 points from Van Schaick. The game was played in front of a regular-season record crowd of 5,627.
The team started the game quickly by scoring the first six points with the first four coming from freshman Anthony Johnson. Van Schaick netted the next five points, three of which came off free throws when he was fouled behind the three-point arc. The nine point run kept Fairfield in front by a 9-3 score with 16:33 remaining.
The Hoyas worked their way back into the game with seven straight points, as Jessie Sapp netted a three-point basket and a put-back layup to push the visitors in front by a 10-9 score. The Stags did not lose their composure though, and tallied the next four points for a 13-10 lead with Van Schaick and Jonathan Han combining for the points.
The Stags did not trail again until the 5:55 mark after DaJuan Summers broke a 19-19 tie with a pair of free throws. It was the start of a 6-0 spurt that was capped when Marc Egerson netted a three-point basket. The Georgetown lead eventually reached double figures at 34-24 with 1:31 left in the half, but the Stags came back with six points to end the half and close the gap to 34-30. Mamadou Diakhate, in his first game of the season, tallied four of the six points in the half-closing run.
Georgetown took control of the game when it started the second half with a 17-2 run over seven minutes of play to push the lead to its biggest margin of 19 points, 51-32. The Stags followed with a 7-0 run to come the closest it would for the remainder of the game at 51-39, putting an exclamation point on the run with Anthony Johnson's dunk at the 11:12 mark.
Anthony Johnson and Diakhate finished the game with seven points each. Summer led all scorers with 17 points, while Sapp tacked on 14 points for the Hoyas.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Loyola University Chicago at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.
