Bridgeport, Conn. -- Maceo Wofford scored a game-high 21 points, including four points in overtime, as Iona College (1-6 overall, 1-0 MAAC) defeated Fairfield University (0-4, 0-1) by an 82-78 score.
Fairfield held an 11-point lead 73-62 with 3:41 remaining in the game, but Wofford's three-point shooting brought the Gaels right back into the game. The guard hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to eight, 73-65. Following a steal and layup by Dyree Wilson, Wofford hit another three-pointer to make the sscore 73-70 with 2:02 remaining. Guard Tyquawn Goode made one of two free throw to give the Stags a 74-70 lead, but a pair of free throws by Wofford cut the deficit to two points, 74-72 with 1:32 remaining. Wofford was not done yet, as he hit a pair of free throws with 54 seconds remaining to make the score 74-74 with 54 seconds left.
Neither team managed any more offense, as Iona's Solomon Brown's buzzer shot fell short. Wofford started the overtime with a pair of free throws for a 76-74 lead with 3:46 remaining. Fairfield tied the game on a pair of free throws by Kudjo Sogadzi, the last of his career-high 20 points. Iona scored the next four points on a Charles Henson layup and two free throws by Wilson. The Stags cut the lead in half on Rob Thomson's layup, but Iona sealed the game on Brown's free throws with 18 seconds remaining, making the final score 82-78.
Fairfield started the game well, jumpion out to a 13-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Sogadzi had a pair of three-point baskets during the run, while Sam Spann added four points. The Fairfield lead reached 13 points at 26-13 with 12:05 remaining. Iona slowly creeped back into the game, eventually cutting the lead to five points at halftime, 43-38. Sogadzi had 14 points in the half, while Spann added 10.
Spann finished the game with a double-double, registering 13 points and 10 rebounds. Wilson also had a double-double for Iona, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
