Fairfield, Conn. -- Ajou Deng, a former student-athlete at the University of Connecticut, has enrolled at Fairfield University effective with an intersession course, which began today. Deng began the academic year at the University of Connecticut, but decided to transfer from the school at the end of the Fall semester.
In accordance with NCAA transfer regulations, Deng will not be eligible to play basketball at Fairfield University for two semesters. He can practice with the team, but cannot travel or participate in any basketball activities off campus. Deng will be eligible to play for the Stags following the Fall semester of 2001.
Before his transfer, Deng played six games at the University of Connecticut. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Quinnipiac. In 1999-2000, Deng played in all 35 games, starting 12. He averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He was tied for the team lead with 47 blocks, and led the team in blocks in 15 games. He earned the 1999-2000 Big East Pre-Season Rookie of the Year.
The Fairfield University men's basketball team is coached by third-year head coach Tim O'Toole, who has led the Stags to a 4-6 start this season.
