FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Herbie Allen (New York, N.Y.) earned his first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball rookie of the week after helping the Fairfield University men's basketball team post a 2-1 record last week.
Allen started the week with a career performance against Rider University, scoring a personal best 17 points in an 85-81 win. He netted all six of his field goal attempts, which included five three-point baskets. He also tallied a pair of rebounds as well as two steals, and an assist. Allen hit a three-point basket with 28 seconds remaining in the game, pushing Fairfield's lead from two points to five points.
The guard followed up with a five-point evening against Niagara University, hitting two of six field goal attempts with one three-point field goal against the Purple Eagles. Allen nearly tied his career high a few days later with a 15-point afternoon against Saint Peter's College, leading the Stags to an 81-75 victory on the road. Allen made five of nine field goal tries, including three of five three-point attempts, and established a career-best with three rebounds.
For the week, Allen shot 62 percent from the floor (13 of 21) and 64 percent from behind the three-point arc (9 of 14). He averaged 12.3 points, two rebounds, and two assists in three games.
Allen becomes the second Fairfield University player to earn this award, joining Jonathan Han who received the honor on November 28.
Fairfield University, under head coach Tim O'Toole, owns a 4-9 overall record and a 3-3 MAAC mark. The Stags return to action on Tuesday, January 17 at Iona College. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.
