Fairfield, Conn. -- Darren Phillip (Brooklyn, N.Y.) received his second straight MAAC Player of the Week award following a 20-20 game which helped Fairfield University post a 73-62 road win against St. Peter's College.
Phillip tallied 23 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the game, including 13 points and 13 rebounds in the second half. In the contest, the senior netted nine of 13 shots from the floor and connected on five of eight free throws. The performance marked the second time in his career that he reached the 20-20 mark, registering 28 points and 24 rebounds against Loyola in 1998.
The center currently leads Division I in rebounding with a 13.7 average, 1.5 rebounds per game than second-place holder Shaun Stonerook of Ohio University. Phillip has collected 20 or more rebounds in two of his last three games, setting a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record with 25 rebounds against Marist on January 5. He earned the Player of the Week honor last week after averaging 18.5 points and 21 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Stags.
Fairfield owns a 5-8 overall record and a 3-2 MAAC mark under second-year head coach Tim O'Toole. The Stags begin a three-game homestand on January 18 when they host Loyola College, Md.
