FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- DeWitt Maxwell (Newark, N.J.) earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball co-player of the week award after leading Fairfield University to a 2-0 week.
The sophomore started the week with 16 points and three rebounds in a 67-63 win over Canisius College on the road. His basket with just over a minute remaining in the game proved to be the game-winning points. He netted seven of 11 field goal attemps, and recorded three assists and two steals in the win.
Maxwell followed up that performance with a season-high tying 22 points off 10 of 14 shooting from the floor in a 69-59 win over Niagara University. The forward scored 14 of the team's 30 first-half points which kept the Stags in the game, trailing only by three points, 33-30 at intermission. He added eight more points in the second half, connecting on four of six field goal attempts.
Maxwell raised his field goal percentage to 51.7 percent after shooting 68 percent (17 of 25) in last week's two contests. He also improved his scoring average to 11.0, netting 241 points in 22 games. Maxwell remains one of the team's top offensive rebounders, collecting 57 caroms to date.
The Stags, under sixth-year head coach Tim O'Toole, own a 14-8 overall record and a 7-4 MAAC mark. The team has won five straight games, the second time this season that the squad has accomplished that task. Fairfield plays Rider University on the road on February 11 at 7:30 pm, before returning home for games against Canisius (February 14) and Niagara (February 16).
