Fairfield, Conn. -- Junior Sam Spann (Huntsville, Ala.) earned his first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week award, helping the Fairfield University men's basketball team defeat St. Peter's College by an 82-68 count.
Spann scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the victory. He shot eight of 11 field goal attempts and netted six of nine free throws in the game. He also tied his career-high with four assists, and established a personal-best with five steals.
The forward remains the team leader in both scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg). He has 12 double-doubles to his credit, and had a streak of eight straight double-doubles before it ended with his totals against St. Peter's. Spann also leads the team with a .558 field goal percentage, a mark which has led the MAAC for most of the season.
Spann becomes the Stags second weekly award winner, joining Rob Thomson who collected a Rookie of the Week award in January.
The Fairfield men's basketball team brings a 9-13 overall record and a 5-8 MAAC mark into tonight's game against Canisius College. The Stags, under third-year head coach Tim O'Toole, have five more games on the docket, before going to Buffalo for the 2001 MAAC tournament from March 2-5.
