FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Michael Van Schaick (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Greg Nero (Red Hook, N.Y.) received Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) post-season honors for their play during the 2006-07 campaign. The conference head coaches voted Van Schaick to the All-MAAC second team, and placed Nero on the All-Rookie squad.
Van Schaick finished the regular season as the team's top scorer with a 15.1 scoring average. The guard established a school record with 85 three-point baskets, surpassing Greg Francis' former mark of 80 set during the 1995-96 season. Van Schaick leads the MAAC in free throw shooting, hitting 85 percent of his free throws (91 of 107). He tallied 20 or more points in eight games this season. He earned one MAAC Player of the Week award during the season.
Nero started the season as well as could be expected, becoming the first Fairfield University freshman to lead the men's basketball team in scoring in each of the first six games. The forward ranks second on the team in scoring, netting 9.2 points per game. He's been ranked first or second in scoring throughout the season. Nero tallied 10 or more points in 15 of 31 games, and earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors twice.
Fairfield University, under head coach Ed Cooley, enters the 2007 Bank of America MAAC Men's Basketball Championship as the sixth seed and plays third-seeded Loyola College on Saturday night at 10 pm. Fairfield University will serve as host for this year's men's and women's basketball tournaments. The Stags finished the regular season with a 13-18 overall record and a 10-8 MAAC mark.
