ALBANY, NY-Both the men's and women's basketball teams took home honors as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced its men's and women's post season awards this afternoon, at a news conference at the Pepsi Arena.
Freshman Deng Gai (Sudan) of the men's team garnered the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, and landed a spot on the All-Rookie team. Gai a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, averaged 11.4 points per game, a league-best 3.96 blocks per game, and 80.8% from the free throw line.
Junior Schrene Isidora (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic) was named to the All-MAAC first-team. The 5-foot-11 forward from New Jersey led the Stags in scoring with 15.8 points per outing, and earned a MAAC Player of the Week Award on Jan. 21. Isidora was fifth in the MAAC in scoring, and scored in double digits 23 times this season.
The men's team picked up two second-team All-MAAC selections with senior Sam Span (Huntsville, AL), and senior Ajou Deng (London, England) being voted on by the leagues coaches.
Senior Megan Light (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester City) and sophomore Ayanna Brown (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) were picked to the All-MAAC third-team.
Senior Amy Hurford (South Canterbury, New Zealand/Bristol East), and sophomore Marybeth Chartier (Dayville, Conn./Killingly) were named to the 2002 New York State Lottery MAAC All-Academic Team.
Sophomore Rob Thomson (Hellertown, Pa.) was named to the Men's New York State Lottery MAAC All-Academic Team.
