FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University basketball fans will be greeted with a new look when they walk into the Arena at Harbor Yard this season. A reconfigured arena that promises a more intimate experience will be unveiled for the 2005-06 campaign.
"Our primary goal is to provide our fans the best experience possible each game," Director of Athletics Gene Doris said. "We believe the Arena configuration will help us accomplish that goal. It will create an atmosphere that will benefit everyone and bring back the famed Red Sea. Just as our players will welcome the energy from the crowd, opposing teams will know they are on the road"
Several changes will come forth from the configuration, beginning with moving the court 30 feet toward the lobby end of the building. Fairfield University students will be seated behind the basket, placing them closer to the floor and the action. New seating opportunities will also be available this year, including seats behind the Fairfield University bench.
"Our season ticket holders will have several choices for the upcoming season," Senior Associate Director of Athletics Pat Murphy said. "We received several suggestions regarding seating at the Arena, and many of those suggestions have been addressed with this reconfiguration. I think our fans will be pleased with the changes, especially with the option of sitting behind our bench."
Fans will have an opportunity to see the new configuration at an Arena open house on August 31. Individuals may purchase their season tickets and select their seats during the open house. The Fairfield University men's and women's basketball teams begin their fifth season at the Arena at Harbor Yard this year. Since moving to the Arena at Harbor Yard, Fairfield University has hosted the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship first and second rounds as well as a game in the 2003 National Invitation Tournament. Fairfield University was selected as host for the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship Regional.
