Fairfield, Conn. - Four former NCAA champions grace the Fairfield University men's basketball schedule this year, including the University of Connecticut, the defending national champs. Head Coach Tim O'Toole will lead his team against perennial national contenders University of Kansas, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) as well as the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) this season. Plus, Fairfield will play in three of the country's top facilities in the Hartford Civic Center (vs. UConn), the Continental Airlines Arena (vs. Fordham) and Madison Square Garden (vs. Siena).
The Stags will battle teams from nine different conferences this year, two more than the seven conference representatives last season. The team has 10 home games in 1999-2000, opening the home portion of the schedule on December 2 against MAAC rival Iona College. Fairfield starts the year with a week-long road trip, playing Kansas on November 19 before moving west to UNLV on November 21. The trip concludes with a November 23rd match-up against UCLA on November 23. The team has a much closer ride to its next game, a November 29 matchup with Fordham University at the Continental Airlines Arena.
Fairfield begins the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season by hosting Iona College on December 2 before returning to the road for three games against Canisius College (December 5), Central Connecticut State University (December 11) and the University of Connecticut (December 23). The Stags return to Alumni Hall for back-to-back games, one of only two times the team plays consecutive home games this year, when they battle Northern Illinois University on December 29 and East Carolina University on December 31.
From that point, Fairfield plays the almost the remainder of its schedule against MAAC opponents, the exception being against George Mason University on February 7. The team's longest homestand comes between January 18 and 23, playing Loyola College, Canisius College and Niagara University. The season concludes with the MAAC Tournament, taking place at the Pepsi Arena in Albany.
"The schedule provides us with a challenge each and every game," O'Toole said. "We have a quality non-conference schedule which should help us prepare for the highly-competitive opponents in the MAAC."
