Fairfield, Conn. -- Michael Van Schaick (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Martin O'Sullivan (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) each signed a national letter of intent to enroll at Fairfield University, where they will play basketball. The announcement was made by Fairfield University head men's basketball coach Tim O'Toole.
Van Schaick, a member of the Glens Falls High School basketball team, can play either the point or shooting guard position. He has long-range shooting ability, which helped him average 21 points per game as a junior. Van Schaick's ball-handling skills helped him tally five assists and five rebounds per outing. He capped his junior season by earning the Most Valuable Player award of the Foothills Conference.
"Michael is a great shooter who has three-point range," O'Toole said. "He has the ability to make an immediate contribution next season, and will add depth to the guard position."
O'Sullivan plays basketball at McQuaid Jesuit, which is currently ranked in the USA Today High School Top 25 Poll. The forward played a key role in the high school's run to the 2002 State championship game. O'Sullivan scored 18 straight points in the championship game, but McQuaid ended up losing the contest. He averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game.
"Marty's size and inside game will add another dimension to our offense next season," O'Toole said. "He is an excellent rebounder and passer, which makes him even more dangerous on offense."
Fairfield University opens its 2002-03 season on November 22 when it hosts Harvard University at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Stags begin their fifth season under O'Toole, who led the team to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament semi-finals a year ago.
