FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team begins its 40th season of Division I basketball tonight, as the Stags travel to Harvard University for a 7 p.m. tip. The Red and White played their first Division I season in 1964-65 under head coach George Bisacca.
The last 39 years have provided many memories for Stags fans, including playing against several of the NBA's all-time greats in Elvin Hayes and David Robinson. The program has earned five NIT berths, including hosting Providence in 1996 and Boston College in 2003.
Some may recall the fantastic finishes over the years, like the Stags stunning come-from-behind overtime victory against Iona College to win the MAAC championship in 1987. Or, how about the near-upset of top-seeded North Carolina in the 1997 NCAA tournament, as Fairfield held a nine-point lead over the Tar Heels during the second half.
