Fairfield, Conn. -- DeWitt Maxwell (Newark, N.J.) signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Fairfield University. The announcement was made by Stags head coach Tim O'Toole today.
"We are very excited about Dewitt being part of our basketball family," O'Toole said. "He is a very talented young man from a very good educational background. He will help us a great deal at either the off guard or the small forward."
Maxwell, a 6-4 guard/forward, will come to Fairfield University via Science High School in Newark. The swingman enjoyed a solid junior campaign in 2000-01, leading the team in several statistical categories. He averaged 17.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game as a junior at Science High School.
He played for the New Jersey Roadrunners, one of the most successful AAU program in the Northeast. Maxwell excelled with the Roadrunners, helping the team win several tournaments during the 2000-01 campaign. Local fans may have caught a glimpse of him at the Connecticut Select AAU tournament which was played in Fairfield last year. He ended the tournament by winning the most valuable player award.
Maxwell is Fairfield University's first signee for the 2002-03 season. The Stags are guided by Tim O'Toole, who is in his fourth season as head men's basketball coach at Fairfield University.
