FAIRFIELD, Conn. - For the second consecutive week, freshman Jermaine Clark (St. Patrick's HS/Jamaica, N.Y.) received the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week award while junior Darren Phillip (South Shore HS/Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the MAAC Co-Player of the Week honor, helping Fairfield University improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Stags defeated Central Michigan 86-85 on December 2 and followed with a 75-69 conference victory over Loyola College (Md.).
Clark averaged 17 points and six assists per game last week, including a 23-point performance against Loyola College (Md.) and an 11-point, nine assist night against Central Michigan. The guard won the award last week after averaging 19.5 points and 2.5 steals per game in four games. During that week, he tallied a career-high 30 points against George Mason University.
Phillip averaged 17.5 points and 16 rebounds per game last week, including a career-best game against Loyola. The center tallied 28 points and 24 rebounds against the Greyhounds, including 15 points in the second half. He connected on 13 of 14 shots from the floor in the game. He currently leads the nation in rebounding, averaging 14 caroms per contest. Phillip's 24 rebounds tied for the fourth-best single-game rebounding performance in school history. He leads the team in both scoring (15 ppg) and rebounding (14 rpg).
