Fairfield University Director of Golf Len Roberto announced today that the Stags' men's and women's golf programs will be Putting for Pink during the 2009-10 season to help raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. The Stags will raise funds through their efforts on the golf course with proceeds going to Rally for the Cure to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
"I have a wife and two daughters who have had friends touched by this disease and if our team is able to help even a little bit in this fight, I am going to have us do all that we can," said Roberto. "I am grateful for the support and effort of those at Rally for the Cure and their assistance in launching this program."
The Stags will help raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer in several ways throughout the season. Fairfield will have the pink ribbon, symbolic of the cause, embroidered on the collar of their competition shirts courtesy of Fairway & Greene. In addition, the Stags will wear pink shirts during the final round of each event in which they play this season. The Fairfield student-athletes will use Rally for the Cure ball marks at their events, as well as sharing ball markers, pins, and information with opponents they are paired with in the final round.
"I appreciate Fairway & Greene helping us with this cause," said Roberto. "The pink ribbons on our shirts and the pink shirts in the final round will help bring awareness of the cause to the attention of our competitors and fans and hopefully entice them to join in the fight."
The final round of each event this season will be the Stags'
Putting for Pink round. Fans, family, and friends
are asked to pledge any amount for each hole of par or better their
selected player scores in the final round of each tournament.
Donations may also be made to sponsor the entire team or a one-time
donation.
Roberto, a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), also has hopes of expanding the campaign across collegiate golf. He plans on presenting the event to his fellow coaches at the organization's December convention with the goal of creating a weekend each season in which events across the nation will help raise funds for breast cancer research.
"I truly hope that this will be successful and that the GCAA will see the benefit of participating in our program," Roberto said.

The Putting For Pink campaign will kickoff this weekend when both teams, members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, begin the fall portion of their schedules. The men begin play at the Mulekicker Classic at West Point, N.Y. on Saturday and Sunday, while the women will play at the Towson Women's Golf Classic on Monday and Tuesday.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure which launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like Rally for the Cure, they have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill their promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
