Len Roberto is now in his 12th year as a member of the Fairfield University golf program, having taken over as the head coach of the men's team for the 1998-99 season. Prior to the 2005-06 campaign he was named the head coach of the women's team, bringing the programs under the same coaching umbrella. He has twice been named the Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), being voted the honor by his coaching peers in 2004 and 2008.
Roberto is very involved in the administration of the game at the collegiate level, as well as spreading the game to the masses. He is a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Coaches Congress, a role in which he helps to shape the sport within the collegiate ranks. This year Roberto will serve as the vice president of the executive board of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association, while also serving on the New England Division I Board of Directors and as a member of the Tournament Committee.
In addition to his post at Fairfield, Roberto is actively involved in the teaching of the game of golf. He is employed as a golf instructor at the Golf Center of Connecticut. Roberto has also spent time at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe, Conn., and has held several management positions at golf stores in Fairfield County. He is working on a full PGA membership and is currently an apprentice in the PGA PGM Program.
Success in the classroom also continues to be at the forefront of the Stags golf program. Fairfield had five student-athletes selected to the 2009 MAAC All-Academic Team, the most of any program in the league. In Roberto's four seasons at the helm of both program the Stags have had 15 student-athletes selected to the league's All-Academic Team.
The emphasis placed on academics by Roberto has not gone unnoticed, as both program's were recognized in 2006 as among the top academic program's in the nation by Golf Digest. The women's team was ranked 10th among Division I program's in academic standing, while the men were 14th nationally in the Division I ranks. In 2008 the women's team earned an NCAA public recognition award for being in the top-10 percent nationally in the organizations Academic Progress Report (APR) rankings.
The Stags have also achieved individual academic success under Roberto's tutelage. In 2005 Jonathan Vannelli became the first player in history to earn GCAA All-America Scholar accolades and was joined three years later by R.J. Zielinski.
The 2008-09 season saw the continued rise of the women's program on the course. The Stags won three consecutive tournaments during the regular season and were just three strokes shy of capturing the MAAC Championship. The men's side also had a solid season, finishing in fourth-place at the MAAC Championship, its highest finish at the nine-team event since 2005.
Roberto, and his wife Kathy, reside in Trumbull and have two daughters and a son, and two grandchildren.
