Stags Fall 9-8 To Vermont

The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team saw its losing streak reach five games on Tuesday, falling 9-8 in a non-conference contest at the University of Vermont.  The loss drops the Stags to 3-5 overall, while the Catamounts improve to 3-7.

Fairfield broke a scoreless tie at the 6:27 mark of the first quarter as Doug Kuring fed his classmate, Grant Devilbiss for a tally.  That sparked a four-goal run for the Stags, in a 2:11 stretch, with goals coming from four seperate players.  Dan Holub netted a tally 21 seconds after Devilbiss for the 2-0 lead, and was followed by Ryan Mulford with 4:45 left and Chris Ajemina with 4:16 inthe quarter.  Vermont would finally break through with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Stags offense stayed active in the early part of the second quarter as well.  Holub touched net for the second time, 1:23 into the second quarter, and Kuring scored with 12:18 remaining in the first half, giving the Stags a 6-1 lead.  Vermont would answer with the final three goals of the first half, to cut the Stags halftime advantage to 6-4.

Vermont struck first in the second half, making it 6-5 at the 10:03 mark, but the Stags responded quickly, as Mulford scored his second of the game, for a 7-5 lead.  The Catamounts tied the score in the third quarter, netting goals with 3:19 and :04 to play in the period.  Vermont would take its first lead of the game with 11:45 to play, however, that would not last long.  Max Trunz scored an unassisted goal wtih 10:57 to play, to tie the score 8-8.  Neither team would gain an advantage over the next nine minutes, until Derek Litchfuss scored his third of the game for Vermont, with 1:52 to play, for the game-winner.

Mulford and Holub led the way for the Stags on the offensive end, with a pair of goals each.  Trunz and Kuring also had two points in the game, with a goal and an assist.  Chris Ajemian also touched net in the contest.

Vermont out shot Fairfield 36-29 and also picked up more ground balls, 37-27, in the game.  The Catamounts won 12-21 face-offs, while scoring 2-6 in man-up chances.

Fairfield captured nine face-off wins, with Andrew Urqhart going 8-15 on the day.

Joe Marra made the start in net for Fairfield, playing the entire game, making 13 saves.  Justin Lubas picked up the win for Vermont, making 11 saves.

The Stags will return to action on Saturday, hosting ECAC Lacrosse League foe Georgetown on Lessing Field.  The 2 p.m. contest will air live on CN8 as well as being available on-line through B2 Networks.
