Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short 10-7 At St. John's In Men's Lacrosse Finale

Despite a 4-0 fourth quarter run the Fairfield University men's lacrosse team fell 10-7 to ECAC Lacrosse League foe St. John's University on Saturday.  The Stags end the season with a 4-9 overall mark and at 2-5 in league play, while the Red Storm improve to 2-10 on the year and 2-5 in ECAC action.

The Red Storm built an 8-1 halftime lead, scoring seven straight goals after Chris Ajemian scored midway in the first quarter to tie the score 1-1.  Travis Nelson, playing his final game in the red and white, would begin the second half comeback with a tally at the 12:36 mark of the third quarter, making it 8-2.  St. John's tallied the next two goals to open an eight-goal advantage, 10-2, midway through the quarter.

The Stags 5-0 game ending run would begin with an all-defense tally with 3:53 to play in the third quarter.  Matt Scanlon would feed Chris Atwell for his first career tally, as he played in the 53rd career game.

Ryan Mulford netted a Chris Ajemian pass with 13:45 to play and Doug Kurung struck with 5:59 left to make it 10-5.  Ajemian netted his second of the game, from Nelson, with 2:23 to play and Mulford struck with 1:34 left to conclude the Stags scoring.

Ajemian and Nelson each finished with three goals, with Ajemian touching net twice and Nelson dishing out two assists.  Mulford finished with a pair of goals.

Jeff Cilente started in goal for the Stags, making two saves and allowing five goals in playing the first quarter.  Joe Marra took over in the crease at the beginning of the second quarter, making 10 saves, against five goals, in the final 45 minutes.

Nelson finishes the season as the team's leading scorer, wtih 25 points and a team-best 12 assists.  Ajemian is second on the squad with 22 points, including a team-high 15 goals, while Kuring leads all rookies in all three offensive categories with 10 goals and six assists.
