Fairfield, Conn: Fairfield University class of 2000 alum Spencer Steele, the Stags all-time leading goal scorer, was drafted 60th overall last weekend in the Major League Lacrosse draft at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott Hotel. Steele, a native of Lewes, Delaware will play for Bridgeport's franchise in its first season of outdoor lacrosse.
As a collegian Steele made a name for himself as one of the most prolific scorers in Fairfield University Lacrosse history. He ranks first in career goals (147), career shots (315), career games played (60), season goals (48), and season points (75). He also ranks third for career assists (63), career points (210), and sixth for season assists (27).
Steele began his career in 1997 as the MAAC Rookie for the Year. In 1999 he was named MAAC Player of the Year, was the ECAC Tournament MVP, was an All-MAAC selection, was an All-New England First Team Selection, and was a College Lacrosse USA Pre-Season All-America Honorable Mention. Last season Steele finished third in Stag scoring with 20 goals, 9 assists for 29 points. He was selected to the All-New England First team, and was also selected to the Academic All-New England team.
"I'm very excited for Spencer, especially to have him right here in Bridgeport," said Fairfield University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Ted Spencer. "He's been one of our featured athletes, and is probably the best player to have come out of Fairfield University Lacrosse. Having Spencer playing at this level says a lot about our program in terms of where it started and where we're going. Hopefully we'll be able place more players at this level in the future. I'm confident he'll succeed as a professional, and look forward to seeing him play.
The MLL will begin its first season in June in Boston, Baltimore, Bridgeport, Long Island, New Jersey and Rochester, N.Y. Bridgeport will play seven games at Harbor Yard. Each team will play 14 regular-season games.
