Cunliffe, Uy Earn Athletic Awards At Annual Awards Banquet

Duo Named Player, Freshman Of The Year

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Alex Cunliffe collected the male athlete of the year award, while Christian Uy received the male freshman of the year trophy. The student-athletes received their accolades at the annual Fairfield University athletics awards banquet at the Trumbull Marriott. The student-athletes were selected by vote of the 19 varsity head coaches.

Cunliffe picked up his award after leading the men's soccer team in scoring with 20 total points, He tallied eight goals and four assists with one game-winning goal in 2006. The midfielder assisted on the game-winning goal against Saint Peter's College, which gave the Stags their second MAAC tournament title and a berth to the NCAA touranment. He earned All-MAAC first team honors this year, and later added All-Region honors to his resume. His 14 career goals and 10 career assists both place him eighth all-time in the Stags scoring record. He became the first Fairfield University men's soccer player to earn an invitation to the MLS combine.

Christian Uy earned his award after he played an instrumental role in the men's soccer team success, helping the Stags win the MAAC tournament title and advance to the NCAA second round. He scored the program's first goal in NCAA tournament play, helping the Stags post a 2-1 win over the University of Connecticut. The midfielder placed third among his teammates with six goals and 12 points, which included four game-winning goals. All four of his game-winners came against MAAC opponents. For his play, the midfielder earned a spot on the MAAC All-Rookie team.
