Nov 15, 2007
Sam Bailey scored three times, twice in the second half, to lead the Fairfield University men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Marist College in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. The Stags improve to 11-5-2 on the year and advance to face Saint Peter's, the second seed, in the semifinal round.
Bailey started the scoring with an unassisted tally on a direct kick from 22 yards out just 4:24 into the game. The Red Foxes, who defeated Fairfield 4-0 in the regular season meeting, tied the game on a PK in the 36th minute of play, and 1-1 was the halftime score.
The Stags got the game winner on a penalty kick at 50:22, as Bailey put the ball behind Marist keeper Daniel Owens. The Stags senior completed the hat trick in the 70th minute, as he took a pass from Jon Kaufman and beat Owens 1 v. 1.
Fairfield was outshot in the contest 14-8, but Stags keeper Jon Paul Francini was up to the task, making saves on both shots he faced from live action. Owens made three saves for the Red Foxes, who finish the year at 6-8-4.
The contest was a physcal one, with eight cards being given, including a pair of red cards, one to the Stags Jack Cleveley just 104 seconds into the game. Marist committed 22 fouls to the Stags 16 in the game. Marist also held an advantage in corner kick chances, 6-1.
Fairfield and Saint Peter's played to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Oct. 7 on Lessing Field. The Peacocks advanced to the semifinal with a 2-1 overtime win over Niagara on Thursday.
