Two Early Boston College Goals Result In Stags' First Setback, 2-0
Sep 7, 2007
Boston College scored two goals in the opening 19 minutes of the game and made those scores stand up as the Eagles handed the 17th-ranked Stags their first loss of the season, a 2-0 decision on the BC campus.
Alejandro Bedoya broke through in the fifth minute when he was sprung one-on-one with goalkeeper Jon Paul Francini by a pass from Sherron Manswell. Bedoya released a shot before Francini was able to cut down any angles, and the ball caught the left corner for a 1-0 Boston College lead. Bedoya played a role in the second goal as well, sending a pass to the center of the box which was run down by Manswell. Francini cut to the ball but Manswell flicked the ball to the corner of the goal, just inside the post, for a 2-0 Boston College lead.
The Stags had their chances in the first half, both by senior Sam Bailey. With 16 minutes remaining in the first half, the forward worked his way open in the middle of the box and tried to push the ball under Boston College's charging goalkeeper Chris Brown. Brown got to the ball in time to deflect the ball wide of the goal and to preserve the shutout.
Bailey earned another opportunity with under a minute in the first half when the ball was sent to the left side of the box. The senior controlled the ball and released a shot toward the upper left corner, but Brown caught the ball before it found the back of the net.
The Eagles outshot Fairfield by a 9-5 count in the second half, which gave the home team a 17-9 edge for the game.
Fairfield returns to action on September 15 when it hosts Yale University in the Stags' home opener. Game time is slated for 7 pm at Lessing Field.
