Fauchet, Bailey Lead Second-Half Rally In 2-1 Win Over Canisius

Oct 19, 2007

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Jean Fauchet and Sam Bailey each scored a second-half goal, leading the soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Canisius College. The game was played at Alumni Field rather than Lessing Field, as heavy rain forced the move to the artificial turf.

All three goals had some historic value for the soccer program, beginning with Bailey's game-tying goal in the 72nd minute. The goal allowed Bailey to break the school record for career points (61 points) and for career goals (23). Rob DeFaveri '01 held both records before Bailey set the new standard. Fauchet's goal was important because it represented the freshman's first career points, andwas the game winner.

Canisius scored a goal in the second half, the first team to score a goal against Fairfield at home. The last goal came nearly one year ago when Loyola posted a 1-0 win on October 20, 2006. It marked the first home goal that the Stags yielded in 871 minutes.

Fairfield controlled the tempo for most of the first half. Bailey nearly set the school scoring records in the first half, creating several scoring chances. In the 12th minute, Christian Uy sent a ball into the center of the box which Bailey secured in stride. Bailey took a shot off his right foot that Canisius goalkeeper Adam Catley kicked wide.

One minute later, Bailey collected a misplayed ball 15 yards away and released a shot that just missed the far post. In the 33rd minute, Uy made a run down the left side and placed a ball into open space. Bailey took a shot that sailed just over the cross bar and kept the game scoreless.

Canisius had the first scoring chance of the second half, and converted the play which began with a corner kick by Eddie Powell. Alan McGreal flicked the ball over the defense and the ball just caught the far upper corner to give Canisius a 1-0 advantage.

Fairfield picked up the pace and began to apply more pressure that was even more intense than its first-half attack. In the 72nd minute, Christian Uy took the ball off a Canisius defender, cut toward the near post and lofted a pass to the center of the box. Bailey headed the cross into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The Stags posted the game-winning goal in the 87th minute thanks to another brilliant cross from Christian Uy. The sophomore went down the left side, cut inside and passed the ball to Fauchet 20 yards from goal. Fauchet volleyed a shot from outside the box that went over Catley's head, but went under the cross bar for a 2-1 Fairfield lead.

Fairfield returns to action on October 21 when it hosts Niagara University at Lessing Field. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
