Bailey Picks Up Goal & Two Assists In 4-0 Win Over Hartford
Sep 18, 2007
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sam Bailey nearly doubled his season point total on Tuesday night as the senior added a goal and two assists in the soccer team's 4-0 win over previously unbeaten University of Hartford on the road. Bailey, who entered the game with a team-high six points, became the first Stag to 10 points with his four points against the Hawks.
Fairfield opened the scoring just 108 seconds into the game when Hartford was whistled for a foul deep in their end. Sam Bailey unleashed a shot off the free kick, but Hartford goalkeeper Matt Glaeser saved the shot but yielded a rebound. David Piedrahita collected the ball and guided the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Stags lead doubled to 2-0 when Tom Clements converted a pass from Bailey from 30 yards away. Clements collected the ball outside the box near the left touch line and sent a shot toward goal that caught the upper right hand corner. Clements returned the favor a few minutes later when he brought the ball into the box and sent a cross to the left side. Bailey secured the ball and sent a shot to the corner for a 3-0 lead, an advantage the team carried into halftime.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half but Glaeser and Fairfield goalkeeper Jon Paul Francini were up to the task. Bailey nearly had a second goal when he broke in unmarked from the left side. Glaeser charged toward Bailey who tried to loft the ball over the goalkeeper. Glaeser just put his hand on the shot and sent the ball over the goal line off the left post.
Tucker Nathans also had an opportunity with 12 minutes remaining in the game, as a right-side cross found the freshman running past his defender for a one-on-one chance. He released a shot that Glaeser was able to deflect to the right side of the goal.
Fairfield finally broke through in the second half when Mike Lentine drove a corner kick into the middle of the box. Kerr McLeod came off the ball and made a run toward goal, broke free and deflected the cross with his head for his first goal of the season.
Francini and Matt Cleveland (2 saves) combined for the shutout and six saves. The Stags return to action on Saturday when they host Adelphi University at Lessing Field. Game time is slated for 7 pm.
