Stags Battle Harvard On Saturday For Poll Position

The Fairfield University soccer team will travel north for a matchup with Harvard University on Saturday with the winner gaining an advantage in the national poll. The Stags are ranked first in the North Atlantic region and receiving votes nationally, while Harvard is ranked 11th in the poll.
The Stags are coming off a 0-0 tie with Hartwick College, which extended the team's scoreless game streak to six games. The streak started with a 1-0 win over Rider on October 22, 2006 and also included two MAAC tournament wins last season. When you convert that streak into minutes, Fairfield has not yielded a goal in 526 minutes.
Goalkeeper Jon Paul Francini has been in the goal for most of those minutes, which has helped him post four shutouts to date. He is on track to break the school record for most shutouts in a season which currently stands at nine shutouts (Roger Noll in 2000 and Danny Glynn in 1998). Francini entered the week ranked 21st in the nation with a 0.60 goals against average, which has since dropped to 0.42 after the Hartwick game.
Sam Bailey remains the team's top scorer with 10 total points, registering four goals and two assists in seven games. The senior also has three game-winning goals to his credit, while Christian Uy and David Piedrahita each have one game-winner.
Harvard University brings a 6-1-1 record into Saturday's game which includes a loss to Loyola Marymount and a tie with UC-Santa Barbara last weekend.
Andre Akpan leads the team in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points, just four points better than Michael Fucito's four points and two assists. Goalkeeper Adam Hahn has played every minute this season, posting a 1.09 goals against average and a .750 save percentage. He posted two shutouts to date, recording the wins against Maine and Vermont.
Fairfield returns to action next weekend when it hosts a pair of MAAC teams. The Stags open the conference schedule on Friday, October 5 against Manhattan College and follow up with an October 7 match up with Saint Peter's College on October 7. Fairfield will play Saint Peter's for the first time since defeating the Peacocks in the MAAC tournament championship game last season.
