Nathan's Goal Lifts Stags To 1-0 Victory Over Iona In Overtime
Nov 3, 2007
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Although the game was dedicated to the seniors who were playing their final game at Lessing Field, freshman Tucker Nathans provided the heroics with a goal in the 98th minute for a 1-0 win over Iona College.
High winds and a slick surface created havoc for both teams through most of the game. For the most part, only the team which had the wind at its back was able to spend any time in the attacking zone. The defensive team tried to clear the ball but the wind would keep it in play on its side of the field, creating more and more pressure for the defense.
Both goalkeepers were able to keep their composure in the poor conditions, each making critical saves to keep the game scoreless. Jordan Bar received his first start as a Stag and made five saves to record his first shutout. Nils Binstock was equally effective, posting one save in the overtime period.
Iona did have a couple opportunities late in the second half that nearly won the game in regulation. Pasquale Abiuso had the first chance when he sent a shot to the far post from the right side of the box that Bar was able to deflect over the crossbar. Paul Racines also had an opportunity from the right side that just sailed wide of the far post.
Fairfield took advantage of its opportunity in the 98th minute after Iona was called for an infraction about 25 yards from goal. Head Coach Carl Rees changed things up when he called Nathans' number for the free kick.
"I felt that we needed a shot right off the free kick," Rees said. "I called Tucker in because he is a gladiator and knew that he was going to give us a chance."
Nathans sent the ball toward goal, a hard, driving shot that went over Binstock's head and just tucked itself under the crossbar for the game-winning goal. It was ironic that Nathans scored the goal because he started the game as a defender.
"We moved him back there during the Marist game and he did well for us," Rees said. "He's a tough player who battles every ball that comes his way in the back, and wins those ball consistently. He's been a true contributor all season long no matter where he plays."
The Stags will now wait for the rest of the conference teams to finish out their regular season schedules on Sunday. Fairfield will play its next game in Orlando, Fla. as part of the 2007 MAAC tournament, which takes place at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.
