Late Goals Result In 3-2 Setback And Stifle Stags Weekend Sweep
Oct 21, 2007
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A pair of goals in the final nine minutes was the difference in this afternoon's game, as Niagara University came back with a 3-2 win over the soccer team. Sam Bailey had a goal and an assist in the game for Fairfield.
The Stags wasted little time in taking the lead with a goal just five minutes into the contest. Sam Bailey sent a cross from the left side that skirted past two Niagara defenders onto the foot of Jean Fauchet. The freshman pushed the ball into the net for his second goal in as many games.
The Purple Eagles tied the game when Matthew Durand took a pass from Miles Patterson and manuevered around goalkeeper Matt Cleveland before placing a shot into the vacated net in the 17th minute.
Bailey started the second half quickly once again when he hit a volley that went past goalkeeper Jason Whitehead to give the Stags a one-goal lead once again. Mike Lentine and Tom Skara set up the play off a free kick.
Niagara tied the game at 81:12 when Durand converted a long pass from Levi Tesch. Tesch sent a ball high into the box which Durand ran down and headed past Cleveland for a 2-2 score. Durand put home the game-winner two minutes later when a deflected ball landed at his feet. The forward promptly placed the ball in the goal to give Niagara the lead for the first time.
Cleveland made three saves for the Stags, as both teams took 11 shots.
