Bailey's Goal Provides Soccer With 1-0 Road Win Against Rider
Oct 14, 2007
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Senior Sam Bailey tied the school record for career goals and career points with his game-winning score against Rider University, as the Stags posted a 1-0 win against the Broncs on the road. Bailey tied Rob DeFaveri's (1998-2001) marks of 22 career goals and 59 points.
The Stags defense once again shut down an opponent by forcing shots from long range and off goal. Rider finished the game with 22 shots, but only seven of those were on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Cleveland made seven saves to notch his second shutout in three career starts. He has allowed just two goals in 335 minutes of work this season.
Fairfield applied its own pressure by making nearly every shot it took a potential threat. The Stags registered 13 shots, eight of which were on goal. The most important shot that the team put forth came in the 61st minute when Sam Bailey broke through by convernting a pass from Chrisitan Uy. Bailey accepted the ball and unleashed a shot from 18 yards away that beat Rider goalkeeper Randall Zopolski to the far side.
The win improved Fairfield's conference record to 2-1-1 and its overall mark to 7-3-2. The Stags will return to action this weekend when they host Canisius College on Friday, October 19 at 7 pm. Fairfield also takes on Niagara University at home on Sunday, October 21 at 1 pm.
