
Men's Soccer Falls 3-0 To Loyola In MAAC Semifinal

The third-seeded Fairfield University men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the number-two seed, Loyola University-Maryland on Friday night in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. The Stags end the season at 9-7-2, while the Greyhounds advance to Sunday's title game and are now 10-7-3 on the year.
The teams played evenly through the first portion of the first-half. Loyola got the eventual game-winning tally at 20:52 as Danny Ankrah flicked a pass from Phil Bannister into the side netting of the Stags goal after a foul outside the box.
Wade McHugh scored the first of his two goals for the Greyhounds at 28:00, touching a pass from Ankrah past Stags keeper Michael O'Keeffe, and putting it into the back of the net. The Greyhounds got a third goal in the final five minutes as Fairfield was pressing to get on the board. Bannister passed the ball across the crease and found McHugh in front of the net.
O'Keeffe made five saves for the Stags, playing 88:12 in net for the Stags. Matt Cleveland minded the net for the final 1:48 for Fairfield. Kyle Wittman earned the win in net for Loyola, making eight saves.
The Stags finished the game with a 16-10 advantage in shots, with both teams putting eight shots on net. Fairfield also had an 11-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
