MORGANTOWN, WVA. - The Fairfield University men's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 1-0 setback to West Virginia University in the first round of the 2006 West Virginia Shootout. The Stags will play the University of Pittsburgh in the second round on Sunday.

The host school scored the game's only goal 31 minutes into the first half. Jyler Noviello came off the bench to post the goal, taking a pass from Mike Anoia from the left side. Noviello converted the cross and caught the upper left corner from eight yards out, making the score 1-0.

Jon Paul Francini finished the game with two saves, the same amount of stops made by Mountaineer goalkeeper Nick Noble. West Virginia outshot Fairfield by a 12-5 count, including a 6-1 margin in the first half.

Alex Cunliffe and Paul McQuade each had two shots for Fairfield, while Mike Calabrese added a shot in the game.
