FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Vasilis Androutsos (Toronto, Ont.) was selected by the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer League (USL) First Division in the league's annual college player draft. The forward was chosen with the team's second-round pick, the 24th overall pick in the draft.
"We are very pleased with our picks," Montreal Head Coach Nick De Santis said in a press release. "We had our eye on both players. Androutsos is a big player with a more defensive style. They will have a chance to show what they can do at our next training camp."
Androutsos joined Simon Gatti of the University of Rhode Island as the Impact's top two choices in the draft.
Androutsos closed out the 2005 campaign with a team-high 28 points, securing 11 goals and six assists. He was one goal and one point shy of tying the school records in those statistical categories. Androutsos finished his career with 51 total points, which places third all-time at Fairfield University. His 18 goals ties him for second all-time on the career list, while his 15 assists ranks him third at the University.
The forward helped Fairfield University post a 13-4-3 overall record, an 8-0-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) mark, and a spot in the 2005 MAAC tournament championship game. The Stags, under head coach Carl Rees, earned a spot in National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 poll during the year, reaching as high as number 20 in the ranking.
