FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- There's no question that the Fairfield University men's soccer team is doing things that get noticed. Three wins in one week, extending their regular-season home winning streak to 13 games, and sitting atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference will certainly turn heads. Now, you can add a number 19 ranking in the October 3 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll to the list of accolades.
Head Coach Carl Rees and his lads have moved into the top spot in the North Atlantic Region, after spending a couple of weeks in the number two slot. That improvement in the poll pushed the Stags into the national rankings for the first time this year. Fairfield owns a 6-2-1 overall record, and an unblemished 2-0 mark in conference play.
But, things will not get any easier for the Stags. This week alone brings road games against Ivy League and intrastate foe Yale University on Wednesday, followed by a conference match up with regionally-ranked Iona College (#7 in the North Atlantic) on Saturday afternoon. And not to be forgotten, Fairfield will put its home streak on the line against another Ivy League opponent on October 9 when it hosts Harvard University.
The Stags have been regulars in the national poll under Coach Rees, including the 2005 campaign. Fairfield earned the program's first-ever national ranking in 2001, where it reached as high as number 12 in the poll.
