
Men's Tennis Takes Fourth at MAAC Championships
Apr 22, 2007FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Fairfield men's tennis team placed fourth at the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships this afternoon after dropping a hard fought match to second-seeded Niagara, 4-2, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
It was the last match in a Stags uniform for seniors Zachary Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Jonathan Fernando (Verona, N.J.) who will leave Fairfield as the top-two all-time wins leaders, respectively. Morrison has tallied a combined 122 career wins (73 singles, 49 doubles) while Fernando has recorded a combined 121 career wins (64 singles, 57 doubles).
At No. 3 singles this afternoon, Morrison won his final match of his career with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Justin McConkey. Morrison finished the year with a 21-10 singles record.
At No. 1 singles, Fernando edged Walter Garcia, 6-7(4-7), 6-0, 10-7 to win the final match of his career. He went 15-15 in singles action and 16-15 in doubles play this season.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Ryan Berthod (White Plains, N.Y.) fell to Erick Garcia, 6-2, 6-4, while junior Balazs Szikla (Budapest, Hungary) fell to Roman Silin, 2-6, 7-6(7-5), 10-5 at No. 4 singles. At the fifth spot, Chip Palumbo (Winchester, Mass.) fell to Alex Abji, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Glen Gannon (Chatham, N.J.) fell to Marc Dickinson, 7-6(7-5), 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Fernando, Morrison, and Szikla were all named to the MAAC
All-Academic Team.
Fairfield, who set the program record for wins in a season,
finishes the year with a 13-10 overall mark.
