Jun 28, 2007

Fairfield men's tennis coach Ed Paige announced two additions to the Class of 2011 as Thomas Wilbur (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and George Laffey (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) will be hitting the courts for the Stags this fall.

"I am very pleased to have Thomas and George join us at Fairfield University this coming fall semester," said Paige. "Not only do both players bring tremendous talent and energy to the court, but integrity and a history of academic excellence as well. I look forward to four great years."

Wilbur capped off a stellar career at Souhegan by capturing the New Hampshire State Singles Championship to earn the top-ranking of any singles player in the state. He was also chosen as the U.S. Marine Corps Male Athlete of Year as a senior and is a two-time New Hampshire Telegraph Tennis Player of the Year. Wilbur, a three-time team MVP, earned a rating as high as 20th in New England in the USTA Boys 18s rankings.

Laffey, who had originally signed an NLI with Wake Forest, won his second-straight Somerset County Singles title in New Jersey and advanced to the state semifinals to conclude his senior campaign at Ridge High School. He has posted numerous International Tennis Federation junior wins and was the Sportsmanship Award recipient at a USTA Boys 16s National Ppen in Boston. Laffey is currently ranked No. 1 in New Jersey and fourth in the Eastern section by the USTA.

Wilbur and Laffey will join Rob Ferrante (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) as members of the Class of 2011. Ferrante, who signed an NLI during the early signing period, is a two-time New York State High School Championship and 2004 Westchester High School Tennis Player of the Year.

Fairfield, which set the program record for wins in a season, finished the 2006-07 campaign with a 13-10 overall mark and notched a fourth place finish at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.
